Now tell me the other good/bad things about owning
an eskie.
**Eskies have owned me for 14 years, so I'll share with you my experience with them.
Small dog less
than 20 lbs. **Mini Eskies are less than 20 lbs. Toys would be 12 lbs. and under.
Easy to train (both housebreaking
& obedience) **Eskies are super smart and want to please, they learn easily. They are excellent in obedience, agility,
and are easily trained.
Medium energy level (I don't mind one that is a little wild but would like one that calms
down after awhile) **Eskies have a lot of energy when called upon for it, but they are also quite content to be couch potatoes
as long as they are where you are. They love to play and run full-tilt around the yard...and then curl up around your feet
while you work at the computer.
Protective but not necessarily aggressive **Eskies are bred to be watch dogs, so
they will bark to announce new arrivals. Properly bred, they are not aggressive, but I think if someone tried to hurt
me, my dogs would create such a fuss that people would be wary of them.
Likes cats (we are owned by a ragdoll and a
siamese) **Before my cat Mokie passed on, she would sleep next to the dogs and they got along fine. She learned that
if she ran across the yard, they would chase, but if she stopped, they would just stand there and bark at her. They
never bothered her and never tried to hurt her.
Little to no shedding **You do need to brush their coat daily, and
males shed their undercoat once a year and females shed theirs twice. The undercoat comes out in tuffs like cotton balls.
They have a fur coat, not hair, so the shedding doesn't get stuck in the carpet or sofa. To make up for the shedding,
they have no doggie odor at all and no dander (so people aren't allergic to them). Be warned that if you wear black, you'll
need to have a lint remover handy at all times<s>.
Loves to travel and doesn't mind life in a camper at times
**The
perfect life for an Eskie<s>. They love to go with you everywhere, and they would love to travel with you in close
quarters so they could be even closer to you. I bred one mini who is quite the world traveler with his family -- he
has lived in Turkey, Japan and now again in Italy. He rides in the carts at the airport with his front paws on the front
of the cart just looking around like he is King. Soooo cute!
** Eskies are great companion dogs. I put
up with the shedding because in all other aspects they are the greatest!
